Cooley was a sociologist who was concerned with socialization and the self. his main theory was called the looking glass self. he figured the self developed as the individual concerns himself with how he wanted others to see him. he saw our socialization as performance. anyhoooooo i just thought you might dig the quote but figured I should give you some background. that's all.

Well as much as I didn't want to accept that at first.. we feel someone is "odd" when they don't pick up the cues that they are performing..off. Maybe before we go to a party or something we should tell each 'actor' to 'break a leg'?
It's still true even if we don't want someone just like us or who plays the bad version of 'the game'. We still need them to pick up cues. (Like if we give them that 'raised eyebrow' look of warning and instead of thinking they just ask "What?" in front of everyone...sigh)
